Zero Based Budgeting Complete Guide for Indians

Zero-based budgeting means assigning your income to purposes. It does not mean emptying your bank account.

1. Assign every rupee on paper

Start with take-home income, then allocate essentials, repayments, irregular bills, savings and optional spending. A ₹60,000 budget is complete when these allocations add to ₹60,000, including any money deliberately left as a buffer.

2. Use sinking funds for predictable bills

An annual ₹24,000 bill requires ₹2,000 a month if you have a full year to prepare. If the bill is due in six months and nothing is saved, the required amount is ₹4,000. Timing matters as much as the annual total.

3. Adjust when reality changes

Move money between categories deliberately and record the change. Do not hide overspending by deleting transactions. At month-end, compare planned and actual amounts and revise the next budget based on what you learned.
