Sovereign Gold Bonds vs Physical Gold India 2026 Complete Guide
Physical gold and Sovereign Gold Bonds involve different access, costs and tax questions. Check the specific bond series and current rules before comparing them.
1. Distinguish ownership from cash flow
Physical gold has purity, storage and resale considerations. An SGB's coupon and redemption terms come from its issue documents; do not assume a quoted coupon equals your yield when buying at a secondary-market price. Gold-linked value can still fall.
2. Separate exchange sales from RBI redemption
A listed bond may be sold on an exchange subject to market liquidity and price. That is different from the RBI's premature-redemption facility and its eligibility dates. The earlier wording that exchange trading requires a five-year lock-in was incorrect.
3. Check taxation for your transaction
Physical gold sales, exchange sales of SGBs and redemption are different transactions. Check current Income Tax Department guidance for your taxpayer status and acquisition and disposal dates. Do not assume an exemption or an old indexation rule applies to every holder or sale.
