How to Retire Early in India: FIRE Movement Explained

Early retirement starts with an expense estimate and a plan for uncertainty. A single corpus multiplier cannot tell you that retirement is safe.

1. Define the life you are funding

Include housing, family support, healthcare, taxes, replacements and occasional large purchases. Separate today's expenses from costs likely to appear after leaving work, such as replacing employer benefits. Review whether part-time income is realistic or merely hoped for.

2. Treat multipliers as scenarios

At an illustrative annual spend of ₹12 lakh, 25 times expenses is ₹3 crore. That arithmetic does not prove that a 4% withdrawal will work for an Indian household over a long retirement. Inflation, fees, taxation and early market losses can change the outcome substantially.

3. Stress-test before making a decision

Model lower returns, longer retirement and rising costs. Consider the consequences of a major expense early in retirement. Review insurance, liquidity and withdrawals with an appropriately qualified professional before making an irreversible employment decision.
