How to Invest in US Stocks from India 2026 Step by Step

Investing overseas adds currency, custody and reporting questions to investment risk. Understand those before transferring money.

1. Check eligibility and the remittance route

Consult RBI's current Liberalised Remittance Scheme guidance and your authorised dealer bank. Confirm your residency, permitted purpose and applicable aggregate limits. Do not assume a brokerage signup determines that a transfer is permitted.

2. Calculate the complete cost

Compare currency conversion, transfer charges, brokerage, custody and withdrawal costs. Ask the bank about current tax collection rules for your purpose and amount; thresholds can change. Retain transaction records, exchange rates and tax documents.

3. Understand reporting and concentration

Foreign-asset reporting and taxation depend on residency, account details and income type. Discuss these with a qualified tax adviser before filing. An overseas account alone does not create diversification; concentrated exposure can remain concentrated in another currency.
